Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety is a natural response for the human body. It's typically short in duration and can range from a mild sense of fear or apprehension to more severe physical and mental symptoms including rapid breathing, sweating, nausea and difficulty in thinking or decision-making.

For some people, anxiety is more pronounced and extreme and can manifest itself in a constant state of fear, or an extreme response to an irrational or perceived fear. Many of the people suffering these symptoms are chronically anxious, where the level of anxiety continues to rise over time. When the condition becomes debilitating and negatively impacts the quality of life or the ability to function for an individual, it may be an anxiety disorder.

There are several different symptoms associated with anxiety disorders. These include:

  • Problems going to sleep, difficulty remaining asleep or chronic types of restlessness
  • Feeling physically and mentally fatigued
  • Constantly feeling as if something bad is about to happen
  • Difficulty in controlling emotions, particularly fear, anger, and irritation
  • Periods of time where it is difficult to concentrate, think, or remember
  • Feelings of choking or being unable to breathe or catch one's breath
  • A sensation of being out of control and heading for a catastrophe.

Anxiety disorders, including phobias, can occur in people of all ages. There are also indications from medical research that genetics, early childhood experiences and environment can be possible risk factors in developing an anxiety disorder later in life.

Treating Anxiety Disorders

People with anxiety disorders may have talked to one or more doctors about the physiological issues they are experiencing. They may have also talked with a psychologist and possibly been prescribed a range of different medications. These medications can have significant side-effects for some people, but even if the side-effects are limited, medication is treating the symptoms; not treating any underlying issues.

We offer online therapy and counselling to address the underlying issues that create the mental and physical symptoms of anxiety, carried out from the comfort of your own home. All you require is a private room to keep the sessions confidential and a reliable internet connection.

Anxiety disorders respond well to talking therapy or psychotherapy approaches. At Mayfair Online Therapy we follow an integrated approach, bringing together best practices and research-based treatment methods from a wide range of options. We customise our treatment plans to meet the needs of individual clients, providing insight, effective change, and personalised methods to help clients develop life-long coping skills and mechanisms.

The specific length of anxiety treatments varies between clients. Your first online meeting with your therapist or counsellor is an ideal time to ask questions and gain insight into the methods they will recommend. This is also the time to set goals for treatment and to establish a schedule for future online appointments. All online therapy sessions are confidential and private, and our therapists and counsellors will discuss issues of privacy, recording, note-taking and other matters at your first meeting.

Mayfair Online Therapy have over 20 years of experience in the field of psychotherapy, covering the treatment of a wide range of issues. We are based in Mayfair in central London, but can work with clients from across the UK and Internationally.
